Office of Study Abroad Scholarships for KU Students
The Office of Study Abroad Scholarships are divided into four different Scholarship Categories, each with their own application. To apply for any of the following scholarships, please click on the title of the Scholarship.KU Office of Study Abroad Scholarships:
KU Office of Study Abroad administers multiple scholarships through one online scholarship application. The following scholarships are all administered through the KU Office of Study Abroad Scholarships:
Altrusa International, Inc. Hazel Lee Simmons Memorial Study Abroad Scholarship
Funds provided by Altrusa International, Inc. of Lawrence, Kansas for female students who graduated from a Kansas high school (preferably with Douglas County residency). Awards up to $500.
G. Wayne Burge Scholarship
Fund created with generous support of G. Wayne Burge, KU alumnus and former participant of the San Jose, Costa Rica study abroad program. Awards are designed to assist students on semester study abroad programs to Costa Rica or more generally in a Central or South American country. Awards up to $1,500.
Dr. J.A. Burzle Scholarship
Funds provided by family and friends of Dr. Burzle. Dr. Burzle taught German at the University of Kansas for over 30 years and was a strong supporter of international exchange programs. Awards up to $1,500.
Andrew P. Debicki International Student Exchange Program (ISEP) Study Abroad Scholarship
Fund created with generous support of Mary-Elizabeth Debicki Guinness, former Director of the KU Office of Study Abroad and former wife of Andrew Debicki. Awards up to $2,000 for students on ISEP direct exchange programs.
Foreign Study Scholarship
Funds provided by the Chancellor's office. Awards range from $250 - $1,000.
Dr. Robert A. Granberg Memorial Scholarship
Funds provided by the Granberg family. Dr. Granberg taught at the University of Kansas for many years in the Department of Spanish & Portuguese. Awards range from $500 - $1,000 for students pursuing academic programs in Spain, with preference given to students in Linguistics or Spanish and Portuguese.
Shirley Cundiff Haines and Jordan L. Haines Study Abroad Scholarship
Fund created with generous support of Shirley Cundiff Haines and the late Jordan Haines especially for students studying the visual arts, literature, architecture, and other areas of the humanities. Awards up to $1,500.
Larry D. and Donna Manning Horner Scholarship
Fund created with the generous support of Larry D. Horner and Donna Manning Horner. Awards up to $2,000.
Gus Rau Meyer Jr. Memorial Scholarship
Fund created in memory of Gus Rau Meyer Jr. who studied in Newcastle, Australia. Awards up to $1,600.
David C. Oswald Study Abroad Scholarship
Funds provided with generous support of Mr. David Oswald. Awards up to $1,000.
Jean Hardy Robinson Travel Award
Fund created with generous contributions of Jean Hardy Robinson, Ph.D. to support students traveling to francophone countries. Awards total $500.
Peter Gilles Springer Fellowship for Study in France
Fund created with the generous contribution of Phyllis Springer Sipahioglu to support outstanding graduate students in French, History or Political Science who wish to pursue research and/or studies in France. Awards total $1,200.
Undergraduate Study Abroad Scholarship
Funds created with generous contributions made by Tom and Jann Rudkin to support undergraduate students wishing to participate in a Humanities/Western Civilization or Language/Culture program abroad. Awards up to $1,600.

Costa Rica Early Start Program Scholarship:
Funding provided with the generous support of Richard Paegelow, KU alumnus and former participant of the San Jose, Costa Rica study abroad program. Awards are designed to assist KU undergraduate students who can benefit from the month-long Early Start program to strengthen language and cultural adaptation skills in anticipation of semester study at Universidad de Costa Rica. Awards total $1,200.
Drs. Dean T. and Elisabeth Collins Study Abroad Scholarship:
Fund created by estate gift from the late Dean and Elisabeth Collins. Awards up to $5,000 for students on semester or year long programs to Germany. Open to all majors but preference for students studying music and particularly opera.
Krehbiel German Language Summer Institute Scholarship:
Fund created with the generous contribution of Carl Krehbiel to provide support for KU degree-seeking students attending the German Summer Language Institute programs in Holzkirchen and Eutin, Germany. Awards up to $4,000.
Kevin and Joann Nunnink Scholarship:
Funds provided with generous support of Kevin and Joann Nunnink. Recipients must be participants in the St. Lawrence Catholic Campus Center, have demonstrated financial need as determined by the FAFSA, and graduated high school from a metropolitan area under 75,000 in population in Kansas, Missouri, Colorado, Oklahoma, Iowa, Arkansas or Nebraska. Awards up to $1,200.
Korea Study Abroad Scholarship:
This scholarship is open to KU degree-seeking undergraduate and graduate students applying for a Student Initiated Program for Yonsei University in South Korea through the Office of Study Abroad. Scholarship awards for the summer are $1,500 and semester awards range from $3,000-$4,000.
Anita Herzfeld Study Abroad Scholarship for Latin America:
This scholarship is open to KU degree-seeking undergraduate students who have applied to a summer, semester or academic year length study abroad program in Latin America. The scholarship honors the contributions of Anita Herzfeld, professor emerita of Latin American and Caribbean Studies and former director of the Office of Study Abroad. A beloved teacher and noted linguist, Prof. Herzfeld retired in 2012 after working to expand international education for KU students during a distinguished career spanning more than fifty years. The Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies will be awarding scholarships at $500 each.
