Alexandru Ioan Cuza University, located in Iasi, Romania, is the oldest university in the country, dating back to 1860 which is the year after the country was established. This university is divided into 15 different faculties that range across a variety of subject areas. The faculties include: Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Economics and Business Administration, Geography and Geology, History, Law, Letters, Mathematics, Philosophy and Social-Political Sciences, Physical Education and Sports, Physics, Psychology and Education Sciences, Orthodox Theology, Catholic Theology, and European Studies. The courses for these faculties are taught in English, French, or Romanian (depends on a subject-by-subject basis). The university is home to the Mihai Eminescu Central University Library which holds a large amount of volumes from old, rare works. Some dating back to the 15th century! The library holds Romanian manuscripts, novels, etc. Alexandru Ioan Cuza University is also known to be a research institution due to its involvement in a multitude of national and international projects. The university is a member of some of the most prestigious associations: the Coimbra Group, the European University Association, and the Universitaria Consortium.
Being the largest city in eastern Romania, Iasi is known to be the pinnacle of artistic, academic, economic, cultural, and social scenes in the country. Iasi has a population of about 400,000 people, and this helps make it one of the most popular urban regions in Romania. Five different universities are in the city of Iasi, and this stimulates important research on both the national and international scale. The Vasile Alecsandri National Theater, the Moldova State Philharmonic, and the botanical garden form the basis of the cultural life in Iasi, and these places are important to Romania as a whole.
