The Business and Culture of Cuba program offers students a rare and inimitable view of Cuba. Students will be exposed to the current business practices of a "command and control economy," as well as the multifaceted political and cultural heritage of our island neighbor to the south. The program will include visits to Cuban businesses and lectures on topics such as the tourism industry and the Cuban economy.
Cuba is only 90 miles from the U.S. shores, though it has been all but shrouded from American eyes for more than a half a century. The program will offer participants to the unique and complex history of the country Christopher Columbus described as "the most beautiful island that human eyes have ever seen".
The group will visit many of the important cities of Cuba including Santiago de Cuba, Camaguey, Trinidad, and Havana.
Undergraduate students will enroll in three credit hours of IBUS 500, MGMT 500 or BBA 500. Graduate students will enroll in three credit hours of IBUS 895 or MGMT 895. Credit is granted by the University of Kansas upon successful completion of the course and overseas program.
Students will stay in double rooms in centrally located guest houses. Almost all meals are included.
Depending on flight schedules, the program may have an overnight stop in Miami.
While in Cuba, lectures will be on such topics as the Cuban art industry, sugar industry, tourism, and the role of Cuba in international economy. Students will also have meetings with representatives from the Ministry of Culture, Ministry of Finance, and ZED Mariel, a port that aims to create a trading hub between Cuba, the Caribbean, and the U.S. Students will also meet with a hotel manager in Cienfuegos and go on a hotel tour in Havana. Planned site visits inlcude the Revolution Highway in Santiago de Cuba, the Valley of the Sugar Mills, which was the center of sugar production in Trinidad, and the Plaza of the Revolution, the Malecón seawall, and the ancestral home of José Martí in Havana.
Planned cultural activities include walking tours of the various cities including Old Havana and Santiago de Cuba, touring historic locations related to the Cuban Revolution, attending a show at the world famous Tropicana Club, visiting the Havana Club Museum of Rum, and attending the cannon blast ceremony at El Morro fort in Havana.
Open to undergraduate and graduate students; priority given to students in the Business School. Minimum 2.5 GPA (exceptions considered after submission of a petition).
Business School Scholarships
Scholarships may be available for study abroad programs. Consult the Center for Global Business Studies website for more information on study abroad scholarships for business students.
All students must have valid passports by late March 2017 that are valid through December 2017. If you don’t have a passport or must renew your passport, please do so immediately. The Office of International Programs offers passport services.
Additional Application Requirements
As part of your application to the Business and Culture of Cuba program, all students must set up an individual meeting with Professor Augelli to speak about their interest in the program and how it relates to their academics. Additionally, please come to the meeting with the name and contact information for a School of Business faculty member who is willing and able to be a reference on your behalf and who Professor Augelli can contact.
