First-Time Passport Program
Study Abroad & Global Engagement (SAGE) believes that it’s never too early for students at the University of Kansas to start thinking about studying abroad. One of the first steps students can take to ensure they are ready to study abroad is getting a passport if they don’t already have one.
To alleviate the potential financial barrier that obtaining a passport can pose for students, SAGE — with the generous support of donors Jack and Sarah Martin — has established a program to pay for the application ($130) and acceptance ($35) fees associated with getting an adult U.S. passport (ages 16 and up) for the first time.
Students do not need to have applied to a study abroad program through SAGE to take advantage of this program. See below for eligibility requirements and program application instructions.
Eligibility Requirements
Students must meet the following requirements to receive a $165 award from this program:
- be a degree-seeking undergraduate student in their freshman year at the University of Kansas;
- have never received an adult U.S. passport (ages 16 and up); and
- have documented financial need.
If you meet any of the below indicators of financial need, you will be prioritized for funding:
- you receive a Pell Grant;
- the Student Aid Index (SAI) on your current FAFSA is below 16,000 (in-state students) or 26,000 (out-of-state students); and/or
- you have accepted subsidized federal loans for the academic year.
If you are unsure of the kinds of financial aid you are receiving or your SAI for the current academic year, you can view this information by logging onto Enroll & Pay, clicking the “Financial Aid” tile, and viewing “Awards” and “Financial Aid Summary.”
If you don't meet the above eligibility requirements but are actively pursuing a study abroad program with SAGE, check out the Pederson Study Abroad Student Support Fund for Passport, as you might qualify for an award through this fund instead.
Application Instructions
- Please book a Virtual Financial Aid & Scholarship Advising appointment or an In-Person Financial & Scholarship Advising appointment. During the appointment, SAGE’s financial aid advisor will verify your financial need.
- If you are approved for funding during this meeting, you will receive a link to the online application for this program and be given instructions on next steps.
Award Follow-Up Requirements
After you receive your award check you must complete the following tasks:
- successfully submit a U.S. passport application during an appointment at the KU Passport Center; and
- complete a thank you questionnaire through your online application to show appreciation to the Martins.
