The Passport Center
Study Abroad & Global Engagement offers support for students, faculty, staff, and community members applying for a passport card or book.
General Information
- Apply for a passport or have a visa photo taken at Lippincott Hall, Room 108. Students, faculty, staff, and community members are all invited to use this service.
- Appointments are required. Passport services are available the following days and times (except KU/federal holidays):
- Monday: 9:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.
- Tuesday: CLOSED
- Wednesday: 9:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.
- Thursday: CLOSED
- Friday: 9:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.
- Book a Passport Center appointment online, call 785-864-3742, or stop by Lippincott Hall, Room 108.
- Appointments are required. Passport services are available the following days and times (except KU/federal holidays):
- Go to travel.state.gov to learn about the processing time for a new passport and to find printable applications. Hard copies are available at Study Abroad & Global Engagement.
- The Passport Center cannot accept credit or debit card payments.
- The Passport Center provides printed photos only. We are unable to provide digital versions of passport photos.
- Our office does not process renewals.
- For your convenience, the U.S. Department of State processes passport renewals through the mail. Click "Renew by Mail" for the mail-in passport renewal instructions.
- There is also, for those who qualify, a new online passport renewal option. Click "Renew Online" for more information.
- If you have previously had a U.S. passport, the Passport Center can only process your application for a passport in the following instances:
- Your previous passport was issued when you were under the age of 16 and you are applying for another passport while under the age of 16
- Your previous passport was issued when you were under the age of 16 and you are now applying for your first adult passport (ages 16 and up)
- Your previous passport was lost, stolen, or damaged
- Your previous passport was issued more than 15 years ago
- Your previous passport is a limited-validity passport (issued with a validity of fewer than 10 years for adults or fewer than 5 years for minors) and you were instructed to replace it with a DS-11 form
What to Bring (Adults, 18 Years and Older)
- Complete the Application For A U.S. Passport (DS-11) form, but do not sign it until you’re at the Passport Center.
- Primary evidence of U.S. citizenship (you only need one of the following)
- Certified birth certificate (not a photocopy) issued by the city, county, or state of birth
- Previously issued full validity, undamaged U.S. passport
- Naturalization certificate
- Certificate of citizenship
- Form FS-240, Report of Birth Abroad
- Form DS-1350, Certification of Birth
- Primary identification
- Valid driver’s license
- If this is not a Kansas driver’s license, you will also need a secondary ID, such as a KU or Haskell ID
- Current government employee ID (city, state, or federal)
- Current U.S. military ID (military and dependents)
- Previously issued full validity, undamaged U.S. passport
- Note that this can be expired but must have been issued fewer than 15 years ago. Also note that this cannot be used for both evidence of citizenship and ID.
- Naturalization certificate with photo
- Valid foreign passport
- Valid driver’s license
- Application and acceptance fees
- The application fee is paid to the U.S. Department of State. This fee is included with your mailed application. Must be a check (personal or cashier) or money order.
- The acceptance fee is paid to the University of Kansas. Must be a check (personal or cashier), money order, or cash.
- Optional: Two passport photos
- You can view the photo quality requirements at "Passport Photos."
- We can take your passport photos in the Study Abroad & Global Engagement office for a $15 fee. This can be paid as a check or money order to the University of Kansas or in cash.
What to Bring (Minors, 17 Years and Younger)
- Completed Application For A U.S. Passport (DS-11) form
- Parents or guardians will sign this form for minors ages 15 and younger during the Passport Center appointment.
- Minors who are ages 16 or 17 will sign this form themselves but should not do so until their Passport Center appointment.
- Primary evidence of U.S. citizenship (applicants need one of the following)
- Certified birth certificate (not a photocopy) issued by the city, county, or state of birth
- Previously issued full validity, undamaged U.S. passport
- Certificate of citizenship
- Form FS-240, Report of Birth Abroad
- Form DS-1350, Certification of Birth
- For citizenship proof for minors who acquired U.S. citizenship through a parent who naturalized, please consult this Department of State web page.
- For citizenship proof for minors who were born outside of the United States and acquired U.S. citizenship after being adopted by a U.S. citizen, please consult this Department of State web page.
- Evidence of parental relationship
- For minors ages 15 years and younger, the accompanying parent(s) or guardian(s) must present evidence of their relationship to the minor.
- The following documents serve as proof of this relationship (only one is needed)
- Certified U.S. or foreign birth certificate with parents' names with an official translation, if in a language other than English
- Certified adoption decree with adopting parents' names
- Certified court order establishing custody or guardianship
- Primary identification
- For minors ages 15 and younger, each parent or guardian listed on the document that establishes the relationship between the parent(s) or guardian(s) and the minor need to present one of the methods of primary identification listed under "Primary Identification" in the "What to Bring (Adults, 18 Years and Older)" section above.
- For minors ages 16 or 17, the minor may present their own identification. If they do not have appropriate identification, the accompanying parent(s) or guardian(s) must present identification and sign on behalf of the minor.
- Application and acceptance fees
- The application fee is paid to the U.S. Department of State. This fee is included with the minor's mailed application. Must be a check (personal or cashier) or money order.
- The acceptance fee is paid to the University of Kansas. Must be a check (personal or cashier), money order, or cash.

- Please note that, for minors ages 15 and younger, if there are two parents or guardians listed on the document that serves as evidence of parental relationship, both parents or guardians must be present at the Passport Center appointment to sign the DS-11 and present photo ID.
- If only one of the parents or guardians listed on the document can be present, the parent who attends the appointment must bring a notarized form DS-3053 and a copy of the front and back of the nonpresent parent or guardian's photo ID.
- If only one of the parents or guardians listed on the document can be present because they have sole custody of the minor, one of the following pieces of primary evidence must be submitted to establish proof of sole custody.
- Court order granting sole legal custody to the applying parent or guardian
- Judicial declaration of incompetence of the nonpresent parent
- Death certificate of the nonpresent parent
- If none of the above documents can be submitted and the whereabouts of the nonpresent parent are not known, the present parent must submit the DS-5525
- Minors ages 16 or 17 may attend the Passport Center appointment with only one parent or guardian, or they can apply with no parent or guardian present.
- In the case that no parent or guardian is present, the minor applicant should still establish parental consent for the minor to obtain a passport, such as by paying with a check in a parent or guardian's name or by listing a parent or guardian as the minor applicant's emergency contact on Page 2 of the DS-11.
