Business Administration
General Planning Tips For Business Administration
- Start planning for your study abroad experience early. You can take Business Foundation courses, Business Core courses, and/or Business Administration major courses abroad and still stay on track for graduation.
- Study abroad is also a great way to satisfy your KU Core requirements. Therefore, it is a good idea to reserve some of your KU Core classes to take abroad.
- Scholarships are available for study abroad both through KU Study Abroad & Global Engagement and national organizations. Additionally, the School of Business offers scholarship opportunities for business students pursuing international study. Research your opportunities early.
- Courses to take at KU: Although completing your capstone course (MGMT 498) abroad is possible, there are limited options. If you plan to study abroad your senior year, you should work closely with your advisor to make sure you are on track to complete your degree requirements.
When To Go
Freshman
- Schedule a meeting with your business school advisor early during your first semester at KU to discuss your graduation plan and identify specific courses as well as specific timing opportunities for your study abroad experience.
- After you’ve met with your academic advisor, continue your program research by visiting the KU Study Abroad Info Center in Lippincott Hall. Study abroad peer advisors can help you to identify suitable study abroad options based upon the information you received from your advisor.
- Studying abroad usually requires two letters of recommendation, so it’s good to start identifying individuals who can speak to your academic qualifications as well as your ability to be successful during an international experience.
- The summer after your freshman year is a great time to take KU Core or Business Foundation courses abroad. Deadlines for summer programs are typically between February 15 and March 1st, so visit the KU Study Abroad Info Center early in the spring semester to learn more about your options.
Sophomore and Junior
- Sophomore or junior year is a great time for Business Administration majors to study abroad. There are program options available during either the fall or spring semester.
- Because many of the Business Foundation courses and Business Core courses at KU are taught both during the fall and spring semesters, there is some degree of flexibility with course sequencing during this time.
- If you're planning to study abroad during your sophomore year, you could take a combination of Business Foundation courses, Business Core courses, KU Core courses, and/or minor courses abroad.
- If studying abroad during junior year, you could also look to take some of your business administration major courses in addition to the courses listed above.
- Summer internships abroad are a great way to gain valuable professional experience in a unique location. There are several locations to choose from, and you can participate in these internships after your sophomore or junior year.
- For other short-term program options, you could consider one of the faculty-led programs offered by the KU School of Business. These are great programs to pursue during summer or winter breaks.
Senior
- If you go abroad as a senior, work closely with your academic advisor prior to your departure to make sure that you are on track to complete all your degree requirements.
- Completing your capstone course, MGMT 498, abroad is possible, but there are limited options available. If you are planning to study abroad during your final semester and have not yet taken this course, you should work closely with your advisor to identify a program option that offers this course.
Courses and Credit
- School of Business faculty have already pre-approved a number of business courses abroad. To see available pre-approved courses, visit the Course Equivalencies Database.
- If you want to take a class/classes that have not been pre-approved, complete the credit approval process.
