Global Sport Management in London and Dublin

Visit sporting venues, speak to industry professionals, and go "behind the scenes" of the sporting world in England and Ireland to explore and compare aspects of the sporting industry across multiple countries and multiple sports.

Undergraduate and graduate students in Sport Management and related disciplines will have the opportunity to visit sport facilities and meet with professionals covering a multitude of sports and diverse approaches to sport management in London, England and Dublin, Ireland.  From tennis, football, and cricket in London to hurling and Gaelic football in Dublin, students will learn first-hand about the different approaches to sport management across cultures and sports.

London: While in London, the group will visit sites such as the Oval Cricket Club, Wembley Stadium (home of the English national soccer team and second-largest stadium in Europe), Chelsea Football Club, the All England Lawn Tennis Club (host of the Wimbledon Championships), and take part in a walking tour of Olympic venues from the 2012 London Olympics.

Dublin: In Dublin, activities may include a tour Aviva Stadium, home of the Irish national rugby union and soccer teams, and Croke Park, home of the All-Ireland finals in Irish football and hurling, home of the Gaelic Athletic Association, and the third largest stadium in Europe. Other visits include the Leopardstown Racecourse, a horse-racing venue just south of Dublin, as well as an opportunity to engage with guest speakers from the Irish Rugby Football Union and experience traditional Gaelic Games.

Several times during the program, students will have the opportunity to meet with individuals currently employed in the sporting industry for course-related discussions and debriefings.  Outside of sports-related visits, students will have one free day in London and an afternoon in Dublin to pursue activities of interest to them.  

Students will earn three credit hours (undergraduate or graduate) in HSES 598 Special Course: Global Sport Management.  While abroad, students and faculty will meet regularly to discuss the implications of their experiences on their understanding of the profession. A written reflection on the trip will be due in the weeks after return to the U.S.

Students will be housed in double or triple occupancy hotel rooms in London and in student accommodations in Dublin.  Breakfast is provided daily in London and six group lunches or dinners are also provided throughout the program.

This program is open to all undergraduate or graduate degree-seeking students from any accredited U.S. college or university with an interest in Sport Management, Exercise Science or related disciplines.  Minimum 2.5 GPA.   Exceptions considered after submission of a petition.

Dr. Austin C. Bogina is the Undergraduate Program Director of Sport Management and an Assistant Teaching Professor at the University of Kansas. He also helps lead the Department of Health, Sport, and Exercise Science’s Name, Image, and Likeness certification. A Southeast Kansas native and farm kid from Arma, Dr. Bogina graduated from Pittsburg State University in 2016, with a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education (Kindergarten-6th), followed by a Master of Science (2019) and Doctorate (2022) in Sport Management from the University of Kansas, both with an emphasis in entrepreneurship. He is passionate about teaching, research, entrepreneurship, business development, sports, traveling, running, and the great outdoors.
