Semester or Year in the Netherlands
ISEP and MAUI-Utrecht are total immersion programs. In most cases, ISEP and MAUI-Utrecht participants register as a regular student at the host institution, take the same courses and have the same assignments, and participate in the same activities as the local students at that institution. This means that a student applying for an ISEP or a MAUI-Utrecht site must be more proactive and prepared to handle being in a location where they may be the only KU student in the program.

The Netherlands is often described as a gateway to Europe. The country has absorbed influences from neighboring countries but retains its own strong cultural identity. It is a great place to study and observe the changes that are transforming Europe economically, politically and socially. Besides the windmills, canals, bicycles, and tulips that you expect, you’ll find a dynamic economy, state-of-the art technology, rich cultural treasures and a lively contemporary scene. A wide range of courses are available in English.
ISEP:
Chances of Placement
Placement chances for U.S. students are fair at most sites. Some programs have entrance requirements. Please contact the ISEP program officer for information on sites recommended for U.S. sophomores.
Chance of placements for International students is very limited.
Chances of placement in the ISEP-Direct programs at Leiden University are excellent.
ISEP Universities:
MAUI-Utrecht Universities:
Utrecht University: Geosciences, Law, Economics and Governance, Science, etc. are available to MAUI-Utrecht exchange students. Biomedical Science in the Medicine Faculty are open to exchange students as well. The University College Utrecht and University College Roosevelt honors colleges of Utrecht University are open to students who have a 3.0 GPA or higher. Other Medicine courses and Veterinary Science are not open to exchange students.
HKU University of the Arts Utrecht: The Bachelor of Fine Art is open to exchange students. This includes Painting, Sculpting, Printmaking, Drawing, Intermedia, and Digital Media. Students can also participate in the Bachelor of Design in Spatial Design, Fashion Design, and Product Design courses. The HKU Fine Art Degree is instructed in English. MAUI-Utrecht students cannot take Theatre, Art and Economics, and Conservatorium courses.
MAUI-Utrecht Universities:
Utrecht University: UU offers guest students assistance with their housing through Short Stay Solutions. This independent corporation makes housing arrangements upon request and under certain conditions. Information about this procedure will be sent to student after acceptance by UU.
HKU University of Arts Utrecht: Students at HKU University of Arts Utrecht will also be offered housing through Short Stay Solutions (SSH). The rooms are fully furnished wtih shared facilities in student flats. The rooms are usually double rooms as well.

Study abroad is achievable for students of all identities including our BIPOC and LGBTQIA+ students, students with disabilities, and students with religious/non-religious viewpoints. Before selecting a program, consider how your identities may impact your experience abroad in unique ways and talk with your Program Coordinator about any program-specific concerns. Students with documented disabilities should discuss any accommodation needs with their Program Coordinator early in the planning process.
